Former ESPN sportscaster Sage Steele Clears the Air: No Plans for White House Role

Sage Steele, a seasoned sportscaster known for her long tenure at ESPN, has dismissed recent rumors suggesting she is pursuing a role as press secretary in the Trump administration, calling the claims “fake news.”

President-elect Trump has been swiftly assembling his Cabinet following his election victory last week, though he has not yet announced a candidate for the role of White House press secretary.

Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, clarified on Thursday that she is not considering taking on the role of press secretary.

Sage Steele, 51, a vocal supporter of President-elect Trump who campaigned for him last month in Pennsylvania, denied speculation about her interest in becoming press secretary.

In a post on X, she dismissed the rumors as “fake news,” stating she had no discussions about the role and no intention of pursuing it.

Sage Steele Journey before ESPN

Sage Steele began her career at WSBT-TV in Indiana as a producer and reporter. She then worked at WISH-TV in Indianapolis, covering major sports events like the Indianapolis Colts and 500 auto races.

From 1998 to 2001, she reported at WFTS in Tampa, focusing on Florida teams. She joined Comcast SportsNet in Maryland in 2001, covering Washington and Baltimore sports, including the Ravens.

In 2007, Steele made her ESPN debut on SportsCenter, after previously turning down an offer in 2004 to prioritize family.

Controversies

Sage Steele sparked controversy in 2021 after expressing her views on several topics during a podcast. She criticized COVID-19 vaccine mandates, arguing against forced vaccinations. 

She also commented on women’s attire, stating that she felt some women dressed provocatively and contributed to their own objectification. 

Additionally, Steele questioned Barack Obama’s racial identity, suggesting that, like her, Obama’s mixed race should be acknowledged when he identifies as Black.

These remarks led to her suspension from ESPN, followed by a lawsuit alleging retaliation, which was settled in 2023 when she left the network.

In 2024, Steele joined Bill Maher’s podcast network and replaced Candace Owens in an animated series after Owens’ exit over conflicts regarding the Israel-Hamas war.
