The MTA has brought back a popular seasonal program that offers some financial relief to regular train commuters across New York. Known as the Summer Saturday discount, the initiative gives monthly ticket holders on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad the opportunity to bring along guests for just $1 per person.
Here’s a straightforward look at what the program includes, how it works, and what limitations you should be aware of.
What Is the MTA’s Summer Saturday Program?
The MTA Summer Saturday program allows any rider with a monthly LIRR or Metro-North ticket to bring up to two additional passengers with them on Saturdays for a discounted fare of $1 each, per trip. This offer is valid across all train stations served by each respective railroad.
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the goal is to make summer travel more affordable while encouraging more ridership across the state. Whether visiting beaches, attending events in the city or exploring upstate trails – the program is intended to help New Yorkers travel at lower costs.
When Is the Program Active?
This year, the Summer Saturday discount is available every Saturday from July 5 to August 30, 2025. During this period, monthly tickets will be valid for travel between any stations served by LIRR or Metro-North, not just the ones listed on the ticket.
How Does the $1 Fare Work?
If you have a monthly pass, you can bring up to two guests with you on a Saturday. Each guest pays only $1 per ride(each way). These discounted tickets can be:
-
Purchased in the TrainTime app under the “Family Fares” section
-
Bought onboard the train at no extra cost
Things To Keep In Mind
There are a few things to keep in mind before planning your travel:
-
Cross-railroad travel is not permitted. Monthly passes for the LIRR cannot be used on Metro-North and vice versa.
-
Some trains are excluded from this promotion. Specifically:
-
LIRR Montauk Branch: The 7:13 AM, 8:14 AM, and 10:29 AM trains from Jamaica to Montauk
-
LIRR Ronkonkoma Branch: The 7:47 AM train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma, and its connection, the 9:14 AM train from Ronkonkoma to Greenport
-
Travelers using these specific services will need to pay full fare, regardless of the Summer Saturday program.
For monthly commuters on LIRR and Metro-North, the Summer Saturday discount program can help reduce the cost of group travel during the weekends. Whether you’re heading into the city or planning a day trip outside it, the program offers a cost-effective way to include family or friends in your summer plans.
