You Can Get Free Italian Gelato Scoop in NYC on July 20 — Here’s How

There’s free gelato in NYC coming to Manhattan this month — and not just any gelato. Italy’s biggest gelato company, Sammontana, is making its U.S. debut in true Italian style: with free scoops, sunny vibes, and plenty of sweet surprises.

Free Gelato in NYC this July

Mark your calendars for Sunday, July 20, aka National Ice Cream Day, when Sammontana will take over Madison Square Park for a one-day celebration that’s open to the public — no tickets, no purchases, just free gelato and good vibes.

From 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., New Yorkers can sample Sammontana’s classic Italian flavors, including Salted Caramel, Pistachio, and Almond Brittle — all served up at no cost. It’s a rare chance to get a taste of Italy’s iconic dessert without hopping a flight.

But the event is more than just a scoop giveaway.

The brand is also unveiling its “Gelati All’Ombra” installation, a pop-up art space featuring 27 custom beach umbrellas, giving off Mediterranean beach-club energy right in the middle of the park. Visitors can spin a Fortune Wheel for exclusive merch like pool floats and beach totes — all while soaking up the shade and atmosphere.

This isn’t just a one-time treat, either. According to Sammontana’s U.S. CEO Alberto Paderi, the company is planning a full summer of events through a new partnership with the Madison Square Park Conservancy.

Here’s what else is happening:

  • July 9, 16, and 23: A free Sammontana gelato cart will be at Carnegie Hall’s summer concerts.

  • “Sammontana Sundays” will offer complimentary scoops for MSPC members all summer long.

  • Eataly Flatiron will host a full Sammontana experience this July, with a gelato kiosk, exclusive patio menu, and immersive piazza-style setup.

As Sammontana puts it, this isn’t just about frozen dessert — it’s about creating summer memories through flavor and community. (According to Forbes, the brand views its NYC launch as an emotional milestone — one where joy, culture, and gelato collide.)

So whether you’re a gelato purist or just here for the freebies, July 20 is your chance to cool off, Italian-style.
