NEW YORK – Starting in late 2026, American travelers will have to pay around $23 to enter most European countries, thanks to a new system called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). It’s not a visa, but it is a required travel document that must be approved before you go.
What Is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a digital travel authorization required for visitors from visa-free countries like the United States, who want to visit 30 European countries including France, Italy, Germany, Spain and more.
It’s designed to increase security and track short-term travelers. The system has been in the works since 2016 and is finally launching in Q4 of 2026.
The Big Update: ETIAS Fee Increased
Originally, the ETIAS fee was supposed to be just €7 (around $8). But as of July 17, 2025, the European Commission has officially raised the fee to €20 – that’s about $23. This jump is due to inflation and the rising cost of running the system.
Once approved, your ETIAS will last for three years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first. So you won’t need to pay the fee again until it’s time to renew.
Who Needs to Pay?
You’ll need to pay the ETIAS fee if you’re:
- Between 18 and 70 years old.
- Traveling to Europe from the U.S. or another visa-free country
If you’re under 18 or over 70, you don’t have to pay the fee, but you’ll still need to apply.
What’s Required for the ETIAS Application?
The application is done online and takes just a few minutes if you have everything ready. You’ll need:
- A valid U.S. passport
- Personal info (name, date of birth, home address, contact details)
- Travel plans (destination, arrival date)
- Info about your job and education
- Basic background questions (any criminal record, past travel to war zones, etc.)
- You’ll also need a credit or debit card to pay the fee.
How Long Does It Take to Get Approved?
Most ETIAS applications will be approved within minutes, but in some cases, it could take up to 96 hours (4 days). It’s best to apply a few weeks before your trip—just in case.
What Countries Require ETIAS?
Here’s the full list of countries you’ll need ETIAS for:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
Note: You can stay in these countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You can’t live or work there with an ETIAS.
What Happens If You Don’t Get ETIAS?
If you try to board a flight to Europe without an approved ETIAS (starting 2026), you could be denied boarding by the airline. Even if you somehow reach Europe, border officials can refuse you entry.
That’s why it’s important to apply in advance and make sure all your information is correct.
What Else Is New for U.S. Travelers?
In addition to ETIAS, Americans will also need to go through a new system called EES (Entry/Exit System) starting in October 2025. This system will:
- Fingerprint you
- Take a photo at border checkpoints
- Log your entry and exit dates
This is part of Europe’s plan to improve border control and security.
Traveling to Europe in 2026 will come with a few extra steps—and a small fee—but it’s all part of a larger effort to make European travel safer and more efficient.
